Is Dump Trucking For You?
You are ready to become a truck driver, yet you have a specific kind in mind. You want to start dump trucking. Ask the drivers and they will tell you that the words dirty, tough and rough are all pretty accurate descriptions of driving a dump truck trailer. The saying goes that "where the highway stops is where you will start" and the drivers all agree, but they also say it can be pretty special because you are out there helping to build the world in places where not a lot of people can normally go.
Most of the drivers agree that you should start with a smaller truck trailer tractor, perhaps what is categorized as LR (Light Rigid) or MR (Medium Rigid). Gain experience, improve your driving skills and maintain a clean driving record. When you think you are ready to drive dump truck trailers, then obtain your HR (Heavy Rigid) drivers license and start driving.
Once you have obtained your HR license you are then capable of driving the biggest trucks there are, those that have 3 or more axles, which is a description of a dump truck semi trailer tractor; the big boy. Since many of these drivers starting school for dump trucking have a little more experience than the average truck driver, most schools will try to tailor a training program to their specific needs.
Some of the HR licenses do have restrictions, or conditions. Condition A means that you are only allowed to drive an automatic transmission, which is pretty rare on the older dump truck trailers. Condition B means you can drive an automatic, with what is called synchromesh gears, which is similar to a manual transmission. Then there is HR Unrestricted, which of course means you can drive any and all combinations of heavy vehicles.
It is pretty much a given that most employers would prefer to hire those who have the HR Unrestricted license and most of the dump trucking drivers also want that particular license, as it opens up more opportunities for more lucrative employment opportunities. Also, many employers will not hire a dump truck trailer driver who has little or no experience. They prefer to hire those who have some hands-on time. That is one reason why it is a good idea to go through a school for this training, as many times you can get an employer to at least consider you for employment once you have completed the schooling.
